Hey all,

I just recieved a barelled action from my father that used to be my brother's.

Mauser 98, Berlin markings
Timiney Trigger
IMI .308 Win Barrel
Leupold/Redfield 1 piece dovetail base

I am looking at turning this into a budget (low) rifle for some dabbeling in mid range shooting and hunting.

What stock would you recomend? At the moment, I am looking at the Bell & Carlson Medalist/Varmiter and the Houge overmolded with the full accuracy frame. Per Midway/Cabelas, they are both under $300 and only $50 difference between them.

Yes, I know that the Mauser is not the best action for this, but hey, it's a free(ish) set-up for an occasional shooter.

Do you want a synthetic stock? Some options if you like wood or laminated would be Richards Microfit and Boyd's. Laminated stocks are stable, affordable, and good looking, just heavy.

I have been looking at the Boyd's finished walnut stocks in the Brownell's Catalog and may just go that route as a TRUE budget stock. Heck, I can't even get the wood for $68 less the amount of time that I'd need to shape and inlet it  .

Of course using my dad's account, it will cost less than that ;) .

I second the laminates from Boyd and Richards Micro fit. I have used both on several different builds. Float the barrel, install a stock ferral and full bed the action. You would be suprised at the accuracy that can be achieved.

Here is a pic of a 100yr group shot from a M-48 in 308 sitting in a Richards Microfit stock.

Well, I just recieved a package in the mail. A friend had a Fajen 90% Walnut stock that he sent me. Once I am finished with the bedding and finishing, I'll try to post some pictures.

Don't have any pictures yet, but my dad and I got the action inleted last weekend and I have an inexpensive 3-9 on it at this time. I do know why the stock was free...... Someone had made the bolt relief cut a bit too far back and sanded down too much at the back of the tang >->. Oh, well it is a starter rifle that can teach and grow. I just need to finish sanding it, seal the stock and bed it. although I may just shoot it as-is and see what happens.
